九州中部の熊本県阿蘇地方に位置する世界最大級の大きさを誇るカルデラ（東西約17km、南北約25km、面積約350k㎡）の中に、今も噴煙を上げ続けている中岳を始めとする中央火口丘群（主に阿蘇五岳など）が存在します。

その中央火口丘群のことを”阿蘇山”と呼んでいます。
